I can't drive 55
From Cole:
What do the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar, and the clempson tiger basketball team have in common? 55. Hagar hit it big with "I can't drive 55," while the tiger basketball team has lost 55, count em 55 straight times at UNC. The magnitude of this should not be underestimated, as the tigers have brought some mighty talented teams into the DeanDome over the years. Coach Brad Brownell has the team playing very well lately, but they could not overcome the large gorilla on their back. Maybe next year? Where have I heard that before?
Should be a good recruiting week for the Gamecock football team. High School teammates Marcquis Roberts and Rory Anderson got the momentum going moments ago with their dual announcement. The New Jersey pipeline built by coach G.A. Mangus will hopefully add two more travelers tomorrow. This all leads up to the biggest weekend of the year for official visits. Recruiting is definitely looking good.
The huge road win for the Fighting Gamecocks at Florida should pay dividends for years to come. The young Gamecocks have appeared to be a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde squad thus far, and this is to be expected for such a young team. A road win ignites confidence and gives the team something to build on, especially since they survived the big Gator counter punch in the second half. The player most impacted by the win should be freshman forward, Damontre Harris. Harris helped the Gamecocks get out to a huge lead in the first half with 8 points and stellar defense on the Gator big men. If he is able to continue this level of play, the team may actually have a chance against the more physical teams on the schedule (Tennessee).

Triple Double
From: Austin
Darrin Horn's rebuilding season got off to a 1-0 conference start last Saturday after a thunderous comeback upset possibly the league's best team, Vanderbilt. Should we expect the young team to grab some momentum and become a player in the race for the SEC title?
So you're saying there's a chance. No, there is pretty much zero chance.
The SEC in basketball is comparable to the ACC in football this season, awful. Much to the Gamecocks' detriment, all of the good teams are in the Eastern Division. Four or five victories over western opponents and two or three wins versus the east could lead to an 8-8 record, an excellent result with this much youth.
To do this the amazing disappearing/reappearing man, Sam Muldrow, will have to play with the same passion and intensity that he showed against Vandy. How does a player put up the second triple double in the program's history (with blocked shots for pete's sake) and just a week before go invisible versus BC? It has to be comfort. Muldrow can be a dominating player, but appears to go to sleep in random games. Most of his big games versus good teams are against SEC competition, not quality non-conference ones. This has to be that Muldrow is comfortable knowing he can bang with those guys. Sam does like to shoot the three ball a little too much, but often gets the Bill Vernau (don't shoot, don't shoot, great shot!) response from the crowd. Bruce Ellington made the 6 threes, but Sam Muldrow created the intensity the team needed to know they could win. This is huge for such a youthful team. Which Sam will show at Bama tonight?

Awards Piling up for Gamecock Baseball
From: Benjamin
You would expect the defending National Champions to get some preseason love from the media, and that is the case with the 2011 YardCocks. Junior centerfielder and reigning CWS MVP, Jackie Bradley Jr., is ranked the #6 college prospect for the June MLB draft by Baseball America. Redshirt sophomore closer, Matt Price, comes in at #45. There was some talk about moving the Sumter native to the rotation, but at this point he is expected to remain the closer. Both are also Louisville Slugger Pre-season All Americans. Every team that Coach Tanner has taken to the CWS had a big time stopper, so keeping Price in that role is a big deal. We expect Michael Roth to move into the rotation, possibly on Sunday. This would allow a right hander to throw on Saturday in between the lefty Roth and projected Friday starter, Tyler Webb. Roth could then be used in spot duty on Friday for a lefty lefty matchup or two, much in the way Scott Barber was used to close on Friday and start on Sunday in Tanner's early years.
What can be said about basketball? A young team will take its lumps, and anyone who grew sleepy watching Dave Odom's teams dribble around halfcourt for 25 seconds each possession appreciates Coach Horn's uptempo play. However, can we play some defense please! I admit to not watching a whole lot of basketball this season, but I can count on one hand the times we threw it into the post in the games I watched. Where is Tony Kitchings when you need him? Give us a post presence. The freshmen have tremendous potential and not to sound like a broken record, but we will never maintain a consistent high level of play without better free throw shooting. 61% as a team this year. 61% with no one guarding you. Lakeem Jackson is a whale of a defender but is a bench warmer at the end of tight ballgames since he shoots 45%. This is after an off-season of intense free throw practice. Young teams need support and some confidence boosting wins. Hopefully, the dreadfully poor SEC will provide just that.

tigers looking to enter the draft?
From: Elliott
So some tigers have submitted paperwork to the NFL advisory committee. Hmm. While it is not unusual for a team's juniors to inquire of their status, I thought clemmons did not have the correct forms or their fax was always broken in January. Their guys almost never leave early. clempsen consistently returns their top talent for their senior season, while the Fighting Gamecocks lose guys who are not projected to be drafted. No surprise that Daquan Bowers is looking. He is a lock to bolt. Juniors Andre Branch (DE), Brandon Thompson (DT), Antoine McClain (G), and Jamie Harper (RB), along with redshirt sophomore Dwayne Allen (TE) did as well. Thompson and Branch are leaning towards returning, and Dabo better hope they do. The tiger defensive line was stout the last few seasons. With Bowers gone and DT Jarvis Jenkins graduating, Thompson will be expected to anchor the line in 2011. Expect Dabo the salesman to come out in full force here. Jamie Harper arrived at clemmons with a 3 year plan and says he will leave if he gets a 3rd round grade or higher. That is about as likely as likely as the Gamecocks winning a big game with Brad Dodson in the stands. Harper will be lucky to get a 4-7 round grade, and it will be in his best interest to return for 2011. However, what he will do is anyone's guess. Allen entered the season as the best receiving threat for the tigers and was quiet for most of the year. He has all the physical tools and may leave because he is frustrated, but if he does you can insert his name into the first season storyline for former Gamecock Clifton Geathers.

Brad Dodson
From: Matthew
Who is this you say? Based on past experience, Brad has a direct role in determining the success of the Gamecock football squad. Dodson went to the university during the end of the ugly Brad Scott era (1-10)and was there through the 0-11 campaign. He suffered through many losses, never missing a big game. Yes, he was in the stands in Birmingham for the debacle last season. What changed? In case you were in a coma, the Gamecocks are SEC East champs this year. What you didn't know is that Brad moved to New Orleans and did not attend a single game. Oh, except one. He did make it back for the SEC Championship. How'd that go? Good news Gamecock fans, we have confirmed that Dodson will not be in attendance for the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Friday. Thank heavens. Somebody quit giving him tickets!

Chick-fil-A Bowl
The impending contest with the Seminoles in Atlanta is one of the best match-ups of the bowl season. If you watched the Hawaii Bowl last night, you have no life. Bowl practice provides quality time with the younger guys and opportunities to correct flaws that have plagued a team all season. Here are some areas that if the Fighting Gamecock sqaud improves, they will be tough to beat.
1) Return game. There is no question that the coverage teams took a huge step forward from 2009. The return games on the other hand were abysmal. Hopefully, the coaches took opportunity to try some new return men and most importantly some new blocking schemes. We'd love to see Ace Sanders on kickoff return and Stephon Gilmore back on punt return. Yes Gilmore's gaffes contributed heavily to the Kentucky loss, but he was close to breaking a few prior to that dreadful game.
2) Stopping the long pass. Coach Ward hopefully spent the entire practice sessions working on not biting on the double move.
3) Speaking of coverage, how about the linebackers guarding the Tight End? In order to run a Cover 2, the MLB must be able to drop in coverage over the middle. Our linebackers seem to forget the TE exists sometimes, although Dwayne Allen was covered up the entire clemmons game. Getting those boys to cover someone seems like a pretty good idea.
