Enjoyed getting to spend the weekend kicking of the National Championship Defense at Carolina Stadium. Where else will you see a F-16 flyover for a college baseball game? Non-conference games are more essential than one thinks when it comes to post-season success. Of course the experience for pitchers who may not throw in a conference game is vital, but a stellar out of conference record can be the key to getting a host site or traveling. Last season the Gamecocks performed much better versus non-SEC foes than in previous ones, and they were rewarded with a host site. We all know what this led to. Here are some interesting notes from weekend number 1:
-2010 Florida Ace Alex Panteliodis did not start and only threw one inning in relief on Friday.
-Georgia gets swept at Stetson. Officially put coach Dave Perno on the hotseat.
-Kentucky loses to College of Charleston, Marshall, and Miami of Ohio. Ouch!
-In an ACC/SEC match-up, Virginia thumped Auburn 13-2.
-Eastern Michigan takes 1/3 at clemmons. Scott Weismann can beat anyone on Friday, but the tigers must develop a solid 2nd and 3rd arm in the rotation.
